Here at All Good Wedding, we love a traditional wedding as much as we do a modern approach. Today there are so many ways to tie the knot that capture the personality and life of a happy couple that it can be incredible to see some of the best ideas come alive. Recently a delightful couple decided to tie the knot on an abandoned island, an idea we had never heard of before and had to share.
Dasha and Taylor Milova are based in New Jersey and like everyone wanted to have a special wedding that provided the opportunity for friends and family to come together and celebrate their union, that reflected their personality and spirit, and that would be a day they would cherish forever. They thought about flying to different countries for an incredible destination wedding but knew they would lose many guests that were important to them. They thought about a local wedding in New Jersey but didn’t think it captured their unique personalities. Then they thought of the perfect option.
New York’s Governors Island is an abandoned and desolate island. In peak season it receives many tourists but in offseason, it is quiet and beautiful. The couple decided it was the perfect venue. They chose the beautiful Admiral’s house as their venue on the island and then went to different abandoned locations on the island for their photoshoot.
While images of a beautiful couple in a desolate bathtub may not be everyone’s picture-perfect, the couple found some incredible images while also being able to have fun with it. There is a beautiful abandoned church on the island with beautiful stain glass windows and peeling walls, a perfect juxtaposition of the couple in their bright, clean and modern wedding attire.
The standout image of the lot is definitely the picture of the happy couple sitting in an empty cinema. The velvet red chairs tell a story of generations gone by and the empty chairs again contrast the usual expectations we have of a large crowd at a wedding ceremony.
The images stand out as powerful, unique, and gorgeous. At a time when every couple wants to do the same internet cliches (which don’t get us wrong, they are pretty great as well) this couple has found a unique voice in a crowded space. The lovely couple also has a daughter and says they can’t wait to take her to the island someday and show her all their favorite spots. They are creating memories from the past for their future. Perfect.
