Despite our society being completely focused on things such as girl power and feminism, there are still some traditions that are leftover from another era. For example, the fact that many dresses don’t have pockets is because that the idea of women wearing pants was long stigmatized as an intimidating thing. A woman who was wearing pants gave off the impression that she was powerful and capable, something that worried men in the olden days.

However, that is certainly not how things work today. Though there are always political controversies, feminism is now widely accepted as something that we should strive for, not be ashamed of. Along with this has come the recent phenomenon of gender bending, with many women exploring what it means to feel comfortable in the world.

When you’re dealing with complicated and nuanced traditions such as wedding ceremonies, it’s natural that the contemporary world will also have some ways to innovate on the formula. This is why we were so glad to see a recent tweet about Eve Paterson’s wedding that featured a photo of her and her bridesmaids dressed up for the occasion.

It’s important to note, though, that the dresses they were wearing did not fit within the pre-established norm of what a wedding dress should look like. Instead, the dresses had pockets, something that set Twitter ablaze and made the post go viral all over social media.

A Viral Sensation

With the dress photo being spread on a variety of different social media sites, many people were discovering dresses with pockets for the first time. However, all of this speculation and surprise definitely make one wonder about why theses dresses are so revolutionary in the first place.

Well, with the historical context of dresses being specifically used for women and the notion of pockets being linked only to men and patriarchy, dresses with pockets are pretty revolutionary. They allow women to feel powerful and accessorize in different ways, giving them more aesthetic flexibility.

On top of having a historical purpose dresses with pockets simply feel comfortable. According to the owner of the London bridal shop Sassi Holford, having pockets to put things in can make one feel more relaxed than normal. Due to the fact that weddings can definitely be stressful events for some, this is a good way of keeping the bride’s mind calm.

Complete Flexibility

The pockets on the dresses in the aforementioned Twitter photo ended up making the event itself much easier to navigate. The ladies stored wedding schedules and seating plans in their pockets, allowing them to stay focused and not lose track of where they needed to be.

Have you ever heard of putting pockets on a dress? Are you looking forward to getting them to your wedding dress? Let us know what you think!
